The Next Apron Pattern

Number Two apron pattern is no longer just a drawing on paper! Here she is, in her first workup. Number Two features all the fifties' flair imaginable, with a ruffled hem, two pockets with cloth-covered button details, a gathered waistband, and some optional bodice bows. For a perfect fit, Number Two offers a curved seam bodice and skirt, which lend it its retro vibe. Fully lined, Number Two has no exposed seams and will last long enough for your great-granddaughter to put it to good use. The only thing Number Two doesn't have is a name!

That's where you come in! Help me give Number Two a name she can be proud of! Leave a comment, and in a week's time I will pick the name that most tickles my fancy. Keep in mind that I like the idea of old-fashioned women's names for my aprons (i.e. Emmeline) but I'm open to other possibilities as well. The winner will receive a copy of The Apron Book by EllynAnne Geisel!
2167058117_639acfb41e

After the naming, all that's left is writing the instructions, drafting the pattern pieces in Illustrator, laying out everything in InDesign, sending the draft out to testers, revising, re-sending, and printing. Nothing at all, really! But this naming contest should be so much fun. Maybe I'll even get some ideas for naming my future children, as well. :)

Happy naming!

Meg

How about Carmelita?

You know, my friend has triplets named Lucille Grace, Ida Mae, and Ruth Ellen (Ruthie) and I think any of those names would be fantastic for this lovely retro apron. So very cute!

My grandmother's name was Wilhelmina, and I love it. Perhaps this would be suitable for an apron. She loved aprons, and had always one on her.

I've already posted my name suggestion (Belle, although I see a lot here I like just as much!) but I'm back to say, could you possibly post the yardage Miss #2 will need? I have a bit of fabric right now I think I'd like to put aside for her but I want to be sure I've got enough. thanks!! And again, I think I speak for us all when I say, please hurry? pretty please?

Myrna, after Myrna Loy, one of my fave actresses. She played a lot of moms in her time!

What a sweet pattern and design! My vote is Abigail.

What a neat idea! What I thought of when I first saw it was Sophia or Gloria.

Geraldine. Totally Geraldine. I was watching "Palm Beach Story" today with Claudette Colbert and that was her characters name. I thought instantly of your apron. So there you go. Can I change my vote? or add one more?

how about Doris? This apron just made me think of Doris Day!

The names Eliza and Jane... or Eliza Jane come to mind. And yes, I am thinking a little Little House. I haven't read all 210 (!!!) comments though, so don't know if it's already been suggested. =)

How cute. I was thinking of pigtails with the two bows. The names I like would be

Pigtails.

I'm going to suggest Anyssa or Aurélia :)

I think it should be called "darling, I'm home!", because it reminds me of those old movies in which the housewife opens the door to her husband with a smile and lipstick on and a roasted ham with pineapple ready to eat on the table...

Lovely new apron design! Well, I was raised by my apron-wearing Mom and Grandma in the 1950's so it would be fun to have an apron with my name: "Bernadette'".

Gorgeous apron! I think it looks like a Maybelle- kind of girl (or Mama) next door-ish.

Anonymous said...

You have a lot of nice names from which to choose! I've seen this on the list already, but I do think the apron looks like a Caroline (long "i" sound). It's a great old-fashioned name that is still popular today. Just like your apron would have been as popular long ago as it will be now.

I found your site through U-Handblog and I'm glad I did. Emmeline is a wonderful looking apron.

Very cute. It looks harder than what I can do as a beginner. Perhaps I should be a tester to see if it's for beginners or not. hint hint.

I really hear it speaking "LUCY" or some version of that to me. "LucyAnne" or "Lucille"

It's got a fun swing to it, and the name should be old fashioned and playful. Lucille was a popular name in the 50's...

I love that we all want to honor our grandmothers and daughters and aunts. But not so many moms - maybe we don't like the baby boomer names? Such beautiful suggestions! How are you going to choose?

My suggestion is Reba, for my Nana. She grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina with her 5 sisters and 2 brothers and I can just see the ladies - with their warm hospitality, gracious manners, and sweet drawl - wearing something like this around their kitchen.

Your patterns are terrific - I'm collecting them all!!!

For some reason Molly was the first name that popped into my heasd when I saw this :-)

Hattie (afterall it means "ruler of the home" and isn't the woman wearing the apron the ruler of the home - or at least kitchen? lol).

Well it up to 280+ comments at this time. To many for me to review. I think the name "Dorothea" would be a great name. I love aprons. They are functional, but also remind me so much of being a child and donning an apron to help in the kitchen.

We are talking Fifties, right? Considering your love for the Trapp-Family I checked the names of the actors. There are two girls named Monika and two girls named Ursula (both of them siblings even), so it must have been a rather popular name. Or you could go with Ruth (Leuwerick, the actor of Maria).

By the way: Could you rethink this idea of having your own Trapp-Family, please? I guess it was sort of the role model of my parents, too, and me (and my siblings, but only two of them) were dressed in Dirndl dresses and "Lederhosen", singing in a choir and for the guests... and that was in the Seventies!!!
Anyway, I am sure you will have a wonderful family!

Greetings from Germany, Bele

I can't believe the competition.... but I will give it a try too. I am thinking Caroline (as in Caroline Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie). It would be such a cheery apron for her to do her work in. Great apron!!!

Let me know if you need any testers for this one, I so wanted to on the Emmaline, but knew I couldn't with all my holiday sewing obligations :P.

My three year old LOVES aprons. Every day when I start to make dinner, she opens my apron drawer and chooses the one she wants me to wear. I've noticed she always chooses my vintage ones for me to wear. I looked at your new pattern and thought "OH! Ivey would love it if I had one like that!" So, I would have to suggest my little girl's name for your new apron - which is an old fashioned name too - Ivey Anne.

The apron is sunny, simple, cheerful, and pretty just like "Mary." From the Blessed Virgin to George Bailey's devoted wife in It's A Wonderful Life to everyone's beloved grandmother, Mary is goodness. Mary bakes apple pies. Mary has naturally rosy cheeks. Mary faithfully writes her soldier boy and sprays a little (not too much)perfume on the letter. The apron looks like a Mary.
